Human consciousness is an extension of the evolutionary tool of the mind that has served us exclusively, which is why we do not comprehend animal consciousness . We either fear it or seek to mould it in our domain by taming it. Fear has existed in all forms and an acute awareness of it and learning from it is part of a common heritage, a honed survival instinct we share with all beings. Perhaps an unintended consequence of the evolution of our mind has been an extension of primal fears into existential ones.
The question often posed is, will a collection of entities that are exactly like us minus consciousness, evolve into the beings that we are? Does nature discriminate between organisms based on consciousness? Evolutionarily the answer would be no.
On the other hand, as condition into the future can never be accurately foretold, perhaps our evolved consciousness will serve a more direct purpose when demanded so by a new set of externalities.
